There had been plans for a mid engine V8 arrangement but the Global Financial crisis has meant that plan is on hold (temporarily). For the V8 engine we will most likely see a reduction in cubic capacity to 5.5-liters and very possibly direct injection, along with an increase in the compression. Don't expect such technologies as over head camshafts.

2011 The Chevrolet Corvette coming

I have just been reading the respected US Road & Track magazine which has some snippets of information on the new C7 Chevrolet Corvette V8 cars. The suggestion is that it will, along with being moderately more compact, become slicker and lighter. This also includes a smaller but just as powerful V8. Some of the changes are driven by government legislation and some by consumer desires and demands.

It may be nicer looking, have a better interior, and pack a better punch that its predecessors, but is is quality? If GM expects younger buyers to look at the Cruze, it will have to compete with the Corolla and the Civic for quality. GM thinks they have this worked out. They plan to invest in quality, saying they have learned people will pay a bit more for superior dependability. They even held up production several months because managers were unhappy with performance.

First, federal fuel economy requirements will mandate a huge jump in fuel mileage by 2016, but GM has a lot of catching up to do if it is to meet the 35.5 fleetwide average coming down. Currently, GM's fleet is averaging 24 miles to the gallon, but with the 40 mpg Cruze and the electric Volt hitting the market this year, those numbers will go up.

My first chance to drive the Chevy Cruze came this past Monday morning when a cherry red sedan pulled up in front of The Dupont Hotel where we had stayed the night before. I got behind the wheel and Chuck Russell, compact car specialist for GM, rode in the front passenger seat. We slowly crept our way out of the city and picked up I-66 and headed west to our first destination.

Immediately, I sensed something very different about the Cruze. It is quiet, roomy, the seats are very comfortable and the car is packed with such niceties as nine-speaker Pioneer sound system, OnStar with turn-by-turn navigation, power windows and locks, six-speed automatic transmission and, in the case of this car, a 1.4-liter turbocharged Ecotec four cylinder engine.

Looking beyond model year 2011 the lifespan of the Chevrolet Cruze is in doubt, unless GM decides to keep the same styling as Chrysler did with the PT Cruiser throughout its 11-year model run. That's entirely possible particularly if demand holds up. With the PT Cruiser out of the way, the only compact competition for the Cruze is the Ford Transit Connect, an entirely different and more expensive model than the Chevrolet Cruze.

It’s just another way Chevrolet is taking fuel-efficiency to the next level with the Cruze, which will also feature such technologies as variable valve timing and, on the Cruze Eco model, a unique grille-shutter system. The latter automatically opens or closes slats in the car’s grille to optimize engine cooling and aerodynamics based on driving conditions. Other efficiency enhancers for the Cruze Eco include 17-inch alloy wheels with ultra low-rolling resistance tires, as well as a comprehensive aero-oriented body-kit.

The Chevrolet HHR could very well be on its way out as its sister vehicle, the Chevrolet Cobalt, is discontinued. The Cobalt is making way for the Chevy Cruze which is hitting dealerships across the United States and Canada beginning in September 2010.

Trim packages available for the 1997 Honda Civic include the CX, DX, LX, Si, and HX. CX models are the budget oriented trim package that doesn't have a whole lot in terms of creature comforts. CX models lack power windows and locks, have no AC, but still are as reliable for transportation as any other Civic ever produced. DX models are very basic as well but at least have the option to be outfitted with some power accessories like windows and locks, and could possibly be outfitted with AC. LX models are a very big step up in terms of available features. Standard equipment on LX models include full power accessories, sun roofs, power adjustable driver seats, CD/Cassette players, tilt steering wheels, cruise control, and a lot of other optional features.

This type of power source does come with some concessions. The Leaf has a maximum range of 100 miles on a single charge and that's in ideal conditions. On the highway, it tops out at about 90 mph and will get more in the neighborhood of 60 miles of driving before needing to be recharged. This may still be acceptable considering that 80% of Americans drive less than 60 miles in any given day. Also, to deal with what Nissan is calling "range anxiety", the Leaf will provide the driver with plenty of feedback long before they run out of juice. However, the need for a gasoline-powered vehicle for those long, interstate trips is still obvious.

The 0210-2011 Honda Civic comes with 3 different body styles and is very customizable in just about every aspect. As a subcompact car it gets great gas mileage and handles as nimbly as any car offered for the '97 model year. Its closest competitor is the Toyota Corolla which is also the only car that has been in production longer than the Civic itself. The car has come to be known for its reliability and quality of engineering which make it a very rewarding and inexpensive vehicle to own. The Civic makes it hard to say that there is a better car on the market.

Subaru has recently received accolades for the quality of its products. Following the 2009 Subaru Forester's win as Motor Trend Sport-Utility Vehicle ("SUV") of the year, the 2010 Subaru Outback debuted to again win the award for the 2011 model year.

The 2011 Subaru Outback Limited 3.6R AWD model offers a 3.6L, 256hp, H6 engine, as opposed to 2009's 3L, 245hp, H6 engine. The Torque is now 247 @ 4400 RPM, as opposed to last year's 215 @ 4200. While still consisting of 4 valves, the new Outback has a 3630 displacement, up from the 2999 offered in the 2009 model. The 2010 offers a 3.6 x 3.6 inch bore/stroke, with the 2009 offering only 3.5 x 3.1. The compression ratio is down to 10.5:1, as opposed to the 2009 model's 10.7:1. The changes have resulted in a little better gas mileage, with the 2010 Subaru Outback getting an estimated 18mpg city and 25 highway, as opposed to the 2009's 17 and 24 respectively.

Subaru is performing well in a difficult automotive sales environment in the U.S. In 2009, it moved from 11th place from 19th place in terms of auto manufacturer sales in the U.S. While it is well established in the northeast and northwest, the Japanese automaker has been targeting areas such as Atlanta and Dallas to grow the company. 2011 is also looking bright as sales are up 41 percent in the U.S. through April of this year.
